Transmission
Clutch action should be smooth but heavy, any “graunching” indicates problems with at least the hydraulics if not the clutch release fork/release bearing (requiring gearbox removal). Gearchange should not be sloppy, it should be quite positive but if you have to really jam the lever to select a gear then most likely the clutch isnt disengaging fully. At idle, out of gear, you should hear the gearbox bearing noise, it should be smooth with no clunks or squeaks that could indicate break-up of input shaft or layshaft bearings. Dip the clutch and the noise should stop (note: always test-drive a car with the convertible top UP, you need to be able to hear the engine, gearbox & wheelbearings!). The gearboxes are “normal” so any difficulty in gear selection or jumping out of gear can indicate high mileage and the need for bearings, synchro rings & thrust washers.
